A gift from my guy...

The subject line simply read:
"Brings a tear to my eye"
and the following photograph, (not of him,) was attached.

How can I not adore this man?

  1. you know, a question i've always asked myself is, if we sent every pacifist to N.Korea for a year how many would come back as pacifists and how many would change their minds of the military?

  2. I suspect that after a short time, many might change their minds...only to discover too late that they can't come back to tell the tale.

  3. Notice how the guy on the right is covering his face, but the guy on the left isn't?

  4. Good observation Beth! I hadn't noticed that until you pointed it out, but in retrospect I have to say that if I was that guy, I'd be hiding too. Probably behind my mommy. ;)

  5. look at the two guys. one is taller than the other. that is the reason one seems to be covering his face. they wanted the signs to align. that was a staged photo.

  6. It may be a staged photo but I can't see the reasoning behind aligning the signs, afterall the sign on the left is directed toward the guy holding the sign, not the sign itself.

  7. beth,
take a look at the pic. anybody who saw that pic could identify the guy. then look at the signs, they are practically parallel at the top.
now, to use your reasoning, the only reason for covering your face is to hide it and he is making no attempt to hide his identity. if he wanted to hide his face he'd be holding the sign even higher.

and i would say from it that it was four school kids trying to make a funny out of a serious situation.

  8. Oh, friends...have we learned nothing from the nature of reporters, even the baby ones, from riddles like Griper's where "The Answer be one but there be two?".
Have we come to believe so deeply that things aren't ever what they seem to the point where we forget that sometimes they are?
I was hoping someone else would jump in here but since the debate goes on, allow me to offer you what I *know* of this photo.
It was taken at UC Berkley during one of the "We hate Marines" moments/protests by a photographer for a campus news paper. These are BOTH real UC Berkley students, (they are not ALL liberal there, though they are the political minority.) The military folks in the background, former students, local guardsmen and recruiters had come to watch the fun.
While it is possible that the photog asked for the signs and those holding them to position themselves in a specific way, the photo is NOT staged. The AP picked it up and ran it for a time as did other wire services. It was a headline photo for one day on my own computer.
I emailed my guy who will trace back through those who sent it to him as we both intend to find the article that went with the photograph.

Remember folks, sometimes a cigar really is just a cigar. ;)

  10. Ughh! I still can't get used to being referred to as Ma'am unless it's by a three year old! LOL!

I will keep you fokks updated as I track down and verify the origin behind the photo.

  11. Truly I don't think the origin matters, because you know that the signs could be legitimate, there are people who are that stupid in our country, so whether its staged or not, the sentiments are real. And therefore, the guy hiding his face should, because he is a pussy or at least represents that point of view!!!!

  12. well, as he laughs again, you better get used to it, little lady, if you intend on sticking around this old grump.lol

and beth, i aplogize to you too. i got a bit carried away as our lovely hostess reminded me.

  13. "It was taken at UC Berkley "

Enough said! Whacko city. There was a time, in some other cities, the guy with the yellow sign would be bleeding, but Berkley has always been wacked.

  14. Well, Praise the Lord and Pass the Ammunition! Much as I enjoy a good debate, can we ALL agree that as a general rule, UC Berkley is little more than a liberal breeding ground with a few die hard conservatives trying to contaminate the gene pool? ;)

  15. Somehow, a comment from Griper to this post never made it here. I'm not sure how I missed it, but I intend to post it immediately following this one. Though it may be out of order as far as the timeline goes, this is one man who has, in my not so humble opinion, earned the right to be heard, (or read in this case,) and I will not deny him that...even if he does call me ma'am and make me feel old.

    (Just teasing you Griper.
As a Texas gal, I am well aware of the the word ma'am having more implications than the age of whom one is addressing.) ;)

  16. Well, folks, I tried, but it seems that comment somehow disappeared for good. I seem to recall that it referred to the similarity in handwriting seen on both posters as a notable point in the question of whether or not the photograph was staged, but beyond that, I can not recall the rest of the comment.
I sincerely apologize, Griper, and hope that I was able to touch on the main point of your comment without detracting from it.

And one final note from me...Beth, I think your last comment may be the heart of the matter in this debate. Staged or not aside, the photo represents something very real going on in our country. It makes me think of those words, "United We Stand, Divided We Fall," and wonder how many seem to prefer trembling before an enemy on our knees or rather than risk standing our ground firmly on our feet.

  17. Amen to your final sentence, Angel!

  18. Excellent Blog - Firstly this picture. Well even though I am in the UK it really grips me that that this pratt has the audacity to stand their reprimanding the troops and what they stand for.
Does he not understand that those very troops men & women are protecting his democratic right to protest.
Me - I would just end up back squadding his teeth.

    Kind Regards

    John

  19. Dear John,
Thanks for visiting my humble blog. I must commend you on your restraint...I fear I have a LOT more violence and humilitation drummed up in my more less refined moments for this sorry excuse for a fat slob.
    (Not very lady-like, I know but,oh well!)
I shall be visiting your blog soon and I suspect I will like what I see.
    Be Safe,
    Angel
